Description

Kashan Persian carpets are renowned, high-quality hand-knotted rugs originating from Kashan, Iran, characterized by dense, fine wool piles (sometimes with silk), a cotton foundation, and intricate curvilinear floral designs. Typically featuring a central medallion and ornate corner patterns, these durable carpets often use a, rich, traditional palette of red, navy blue, and ivory, embodying classic Persian elegance and precision.
Design and Patterns: The classic Kashan design often features a central, detailed medallion surrounded by a field of intricate floral motifs, arabesques, and vines, often referred to as a "Shah Abbas" design. The pattern is highly symmetrical and balanced.
Materials and Quality: Traditionally, these rugs are made with high-quality, lustrous kork wool (soft wool from the sheep's neck) and sometimes silk. The warp and weft are almost always cotton, ensuring structural stability.
Weaving Technique: Kashan rugs are hand-knotted using the asymmetric (Persian/Senneh) knot. They are known for their high knot density, ranging from 100 to over 800 knots per square inch (kpsi), resulting in a dense, heavy, and durable carpet.
Color Palette: The traditional colors are rich, combining deep reds, royal blues, and cream/ivory, sometimes incorporating green or yellow accents.
Distinctive Features: The pile is often sheared relatively short to ensure the intricate, detailed patterns are crisp and clearly visible.
History: Produced in the historic city of Kashan, a weaving center with a legacy dating back to the 17th century, these carpets have maintained a reputation for excellence.
Kashan rugs are considered among the finest Persian rugs, often seen as a staple of traditional Persian interior design.
